It's not that's outrageous if you really think about it. $19 is the cheapest product that Apple has on sale. It's a novelty product that everyone wants to make fun of; at the same time, everyone is curious how much better can it be compared to a regular microfiber cloth. It's cheap enough that people that can't ordinary afford Apple products can. It's also a status symbol. I expect the novelty to fade away though after enough saturation in the market so I don't think it's a sustainable one. Plus, most backordered doesn't mean highest selling. They could of undersupplied because even they didn't think it would sell that many.
