Anybody concerned about these issues should consider donating to their favourite non profit that can have an impact that works in the area. Most HN users can afford $20/year pretty easily (others could afford $200/month and not even notice it)
As they say, “Put your money where your mouth is.”
- Grimm1 5y agoI mean I do. EFF, Wikimedia, ACLU (Only EFF is really for this particular issue though)
- gruez 5y ago>Wikimedia that's probably the least worthy of the ones in the list. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Guy_Macon/Wikipedia_has_Cancer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Guy_Macon/Wikipedia_has_C...
- spullara 5y agoACLU lawyers are helping Signal with this.
- Grimm1 5y agoEven better then!
- lettergram 5y agoI stopped supporting the ACLU when they started doing this: Fighting against due process: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/see-you-court-aclu-sues-betsy-devos-over-new-campus-n1206981 https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/see-you-court-aclu-sues... claiming there's no men: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1196877415810813955 https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1196877415810813955 and this: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1199725066302308354 https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1199725066302308354 Telling families to discuss pronouns: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1250795126584217602 https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1250795126584217602 and this: https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1453779768063766529 https://twitter.com/ACLU/status/1453779768063766529 I'm all for defending freedom of expression, religion, speech, etc. But this is weighing into topics that aren't really about freedom and in some cases they're actively fighting against freedom. AKA it's become way more political and one sided.
- Bud 5y agoIn other words, you're transphobic and you think everyone else should go along with you. To put it rather mildly, that's not what ACLU is about and that's not even what they should be about. You don't get to decide what is "really" about freedom. You shouldn't try. Leave that to the people whose rights are being threatened in the specific case in question.
- willhinsa 5y agoMy free speech rights are being threatened. Does it matter what identity merit badges I own to have rights? You may be surprised what group I ostensibly am one of, and yet I find their pushing of this anti-free speech to be atrocious.
- kelnos 5y agoAsking people to not be transphobic threatens your free speech rights? Way to take something not even remotely about you and get offended by it.
- tekknik 5y agoPerhaps it’s offensive to the other side being forced to accept someone born the opposite sex as exactly equivalent? Perhaps it has nothing to do with judging them or their lifestyle? Perhaps by the same logic they shouldn’t care about grouping themselves forcibly into a group their offending at least some of the members of?
- tekknik 5y agoInteresting that this got flagged but nobody provided a counter argument. Cancel culture at it again!
- pclmulqdq 5y agoMy name is gender-ambiguous but I am pretty strongly male-presenting in person. People I meet over email/text communication often misgender me. Before 2016, when I met those people in person, they would joke about it. Today, it terrifies them that I might tell someone or escalate it, and I have gotten profuse apologies related to the pronouns. I don't like that this sort of thing terrifies people. It creates a real bias in people's minds against working with anyone whose gender they don't know. The ACLU used to agree with me.
- revscat 5y agoDemocratic Socialists also have a good track record here.
- mooneater 5y agoWould you name some please? Do you mean like ACLU (BCCLA in Canada)
- nnutter 5y agoThe ACLU is not what it once was. I will not donate to them. Even the EFF is growing questionable. I would definitely be curious what recommendations people have.
- fragmede 5y agoPerfect is the enemy of the good, so I'd recommend the EFF but you can donate to Signal directly in this case, if it serves you. https://signal.org/en/donate/ https://signal.org/en/donate/
- nzrf 5y agoSecond this EFF is where I would go to support this myself snd do monthly. ACLU has lost its way picking civil rights to support or not.
- Bud 5y agoWhich actual rights is ACLU supposedly failing to support?

- ineedasername 5y agoThey have limited resources and so they cannot fight every single fight. Some people object to their current method of filtering. Apparently, groups tied to neo-nazi/white-supremacy are some of the ones they filter out of consideration, but they have done so in the past. Some people think the ACLU should fight specifically for such organizations to make a point that everyone, even hateful bigots, have the same rights. Personally? I'm on the fence. On the one hand, given limited resources & all else being equal in two cases, why not choose the group of people who are nicer? On the other hand, if you choose the hateful group & set a precedent that even the most hateful people have the same set of rights as others, it's close to irrefutable in future cases with nicer people that they get those rights too.
- aesh2Xa1 5y agoIf you use Amazon.com for shopping, and you do, then you can choose Signal Foundation for your benefiting organization. It's a small amount of money, but it's a little bit for every purchase.
- stuartd 5y agoNo, I don’t. Bought exactly one thing from Amazon in the last 18 months literally because I could not get it anywhere else (and I searched for a week before I gave up and bought my mechanical backlit Mac keyboard from the devil)
- leesalminen 5y agoNot such a great assumption anymore. I’ve given up my Amazon.com Prime membership and completely avoided them for many months now. I personally know several others who have done the same thing. I aspire to not hand them AWS dollars one day, but Aurora has been an amazing product for my business.
