Sort of same here in the NL, at some point over a decade ago they introduced overdraft mode for your account. It was 800 euro initially, and now it's tied to your income somehow. It's free but there's interest payment on the overdraft. And you're not allowed to be in overdraft continuously for over 3 months. It's always been opt-in, you have to enable it for your account.
