However, this also meant that characters which differ in appearance across languages, such as

and
<span xml:lang="zh-Hans" lang="zh-Hans">刃</span>
and
<span xml:lang="zh-Hant" lang="zh-Hant">刃</span>,
were given <strong>identical code points!</strong>
