Wanna go for a walk?
- ravenstine 5y agoRide in the car?
- scollet 5y agoThis was always interesting to me because I had a dog that only recognized the "alk" part. You can imagine the disappoint when talking about socks, talks, locks.
- cmrdporcupine 5y agoOur border collies know so many variants of "outside", "walk", "W-A-L-K" spelled out, "woods" (our back woods), "garden", etc. and N number of other words and are at the door before I even know that I'm going there, myself.
- avisser 5y agoThis hits home. I learned a new word when my mom started talking about "perambulation" around my Aussie to avoid premature excitement.
- scollet 5y agoThat's pretty amazing. We've adopted "treaties???" for rewarding our current dog and it works doubly to get her to distill that energy for a little bit.
- laichzeit0 5y agoI get “talks” but how does socks and locks trigger him?
- wiredfool 5y agoSocks imply shoes. And shoes imply walkies.
- cmrdporcupine 5y agoYep, my dogs are tuned into sock acquisition as a precursor to outside. Which says a lot about how COVID WFH has trended towards the sockless.
- alecst 5y agoThey rhyme in most American English dialects.
- ascar 5y agoCan you post a video of someone pronouncing that? I have a hard time imaging how sock and talk can rhyme.
- tempestn 5y agoSock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAslCof0N6Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAslCof0N6Q Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKoe_hDLTv4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKoe_hDLTv4
- sethammons 5y agoHence the joke book I heard of as a kid: "101 ways to wok your dog". Tock and talk are pronounced the same, as is wok (the cooking instrument) and walk.
- mrtranscendence 5y agoIs this really true in most American accents? In my midwestern accent “tock” and “talk” absolutely don’t rhyme, but maybe I’m the outlier here.
- allannienhuis 5y agoin the northwest (Vancouver, BC area) tock and talk rhyme (they are pretty much homonyms).
- jannyfer 5y agoIn my accent, walk/talk/sock/lock all sound similar.
- throaway46546 5y agoI'm curious how you pronounce locks and if you don't mind where you are from.
- laichzeit0 5y agoWalk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfkgn99Svfk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfkgn99Svfk Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG9GBNr7kFk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG9GBNr7kFk Sock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cpffNd2GaA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cpffNd2GaA Lock: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPN_94VMk8Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPN_94VMk8Q Sock and lock sound similar to me, and so do walk and talk. But walk/talk and sock/lock sound quite dissimilar.
- tempestn 5y agoHere in Canada all four rhyme, and are more similar to your sock/lock than your walk/talk.
- aayjaychan 5y agoin some accents they rhyme because of the cot-caught merger. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cot%E2%80%93caught_merger https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cot%E2%80%93caught_merger
