I don't think there is one correct way. Sometimes I like some noise, sometimes I don't, sometimes I like having people around, sometimes I want to be alone. In the end it's about being able to control your environment to some degree. That's what open offices and cube farms have taken away. Being able to control room temprature is also very helpful.
