Several chem processes use natural gas as the feedstock and some of the secondary byproducts also have industrial importance.
As an example, the UK needed high-level government attention to a CO2 shortage that was crippling the meat production process. Natural gas went into fertilizer production and the CO2 byproduct was used by meat processing plants for animal slaughter, when gas prices spiked fertilizer production stopped and the supply of CO2 dried up. The abattoirs stopped accepting animals and meat production halted, but animals keep growing (and eating) so you have a weird bump in meat production where a lot of animals were killed early in anticipation of no processing capacity and that is leading to some weird shortages and price spikes.
I am sure there are other examples of this, but much like the knock-on effects of disruptions in chip production supply chain, the spiking gas prices are revealing some dependencies that had previously been rather invisible to the rest of us.
