Yeah, YAML is pretty bad but... Is there really a better alternative? JSON is a horrible format for configuration, KDL is a cute idea in theory but in practice it makes me want to gouge my own eyes out, CUE is... weird, XML and INI should've been dead for years and TOML is just INI on meth... At least JSON and YAML are somewhat interoperable (JSON is valid YAML* and converting YAML to JSON is trivial) and have native support in most modern languages... * with some caveats
