The biggest things going for Element: Integration with other services could be a gateway drug! Works everywhere (any of the 5 devices I use), and can see all messages once I've entered my encryption key, while maintaining a good day-to-day level of privacy (I'm no expert but this is what I understood). This unlocks the potential to use the app as a go between for reminders and note taking! Without exposing that data or having it censored. All the flexibility of Discord, Signal and Telegram for organizing chats, people and contexts. The biggest let downs so far: Voice channels work like traditional VOIP calls, making it unsuitable as a replacement for discord. Integration with other platforms to solve this seems insufficient. To become de-facto it needs to offer the discord experience of joining a voice "room" or being in a voice room by yourself without needing additional set up. Confusion about spaces vs rooms etc. The interface is fine, but it could use some polish to distinguish between the different situations.
