What about APNG? More efficient, better color and alpha, supported by all the major browsers for years now. It's time for GIF to become a legacy format and stop creating new GIFs unless absolutely necessary.
- franga2000 5y agoGIF is a legacy format and it is absolutely necessary. Browser support for APNG is surprisingly good, but that's not the whole story. APNG isn't supported almost anywhere else on the stack. I don't think any chat platform currently out there will play APNG files like it does with GIF. Usually they get broken by the compression system and only show the first frame. Same for GitHub Markdown, WordPress, most forum software... As it turns out, the only case wen you can reliably use APNG is when you're the one writing the HTML and at that point it's usually better to use a muted video anyways (far better compression).

- marginalia_nu 5y agoAssuming you don't want alpha and only want a limited color space, what's wrong with gif?
- xvilka 5y agoSize, speed of decoding, limited colors.
- marginalia_nu 5y agoWell limited colors can be a feature. I use the same 16 color palette for all my images, both for size, aesthetic identity, and to prevent freebooting.
