Ash HN: Will HN meet the same fate of SlashDot?
- mmastrac 5y agoHN has been HN for 10+ years without _too much_ change. Somehow it's avoided the Eternal September problem over that period.
- jamesfinlayson 5y agoI don't remember SlashDot's hey-day but in the times I've looked at it, the news that gets posted there seems more political while Hacker News seems more tech-related. Based on that, Hacker News gives me what I'm looking for.

- orionblastar 5y agoSlashdot was bought out by Dice.com, then it became more corporate. Signal to noise ratio was bad for advertisements and comments. Seems like chatbots got into the comment section trolling users to try a product.
- the_only_law 5y agoOne thing HN has been really good at is keeping spam like that out. You’ll see it occasionally on “new” but it’s gone just as fast.
- slater 5y agoNo.
- ggm 5y agoyes.
- WalterGR 5y agoWhat's the current fate of Slashdot?
- PaulHoule 5y agoHas an ad on it that says Try the CryptoTab Browser. It works like a regular web browser but mines Bitcoin for you while you browse! Works on all devices. | Do you develop on GitHub? You can keep using GitHub but automatically sync your GitHub releases to SourceForge quickly and easily with this tool and take advantage of SourceForge's massive reach. | Follow Slashdot on LinkedIn Discussions seem to be classified to death.
- jamesfinlayson 5y ago> take advantage of SourceForge's massive reach This ad seems about 15 years out of date.
- jaredsohn 5y agoBoth sites are a part of Slashdot Media.
- toast0 5y agoWill HN fade into irrelevancy someday? Probably. Will it take the same path to get there? Probably not.
- LinuxBender 5y agoWill HN be acquired by a company and turned into a faux marketing platform? I sure hope not. This would be best answered by ycombinator staff and investors. Perhaps they already have a vision and mission statement that addresses this on the site somewhere. Slashdot AFAIK was only a news discussion site. YCombinator is a seed funding org [1] and likely benefits from having this platform to launch its investments and potentially provide a crowd-sourced think tank. What is the average logevity of a seed funding org? [1] - https://www.ycombinator.com/about/ https://www.ycombinator.com/about/
