Actually getting COVID can cause permanent damage to the heart, lungs and blood vessels of some people, which is thought to be the cause of so-called "long covid" which some people experience.

Apparently it's not uncommon that viruses, which attack various organs, damage the heart, lungs, and brain. This can even occur in mild cases. Usually the damage is temporary, typically lasting days or weeks, but sometimes months, and can be fatal. I don't know that covid is different than other viruses in this regard. It's new, so nobody has childhood antibodies yet like happens with many other viruses, and a lot of people are being exposed for the first time while older and more vulnerable.
