Biology is one of those weird degrees, like many of the sciences. A BS in anthropology, for example, is completely worthless except as a step on the way to a PhD in anthropology (at which point you get to do anthropology or archaeology, or whatever). Biology is also a very special case: all of the bio majors I've ever met were pre-med. (Except for that one guy who wanted to go into genetics research.)
