Microsoft is force installing PC Health Check in Windows 10
- _ea1k 5y agoI'm much more bothered that it has obsoleted some relatively new-ish CPUs. Why was the i7-7700 left out, for example?
- DerpyBaby123 5y agoI think you're referring to a different piece of software, Windows 11
- k8sToGo 5y agoThis tool that is being installed is used to check upgrade compatibility
- mesofile 5y agoAs noted in the article, PC Health Check's "primary use has been to analyze a device's hardware to check if it's compatible with Windows 11." A wide range of Windows 10 users will see this check permanently and uselessly 'failing' for them whenever they open Windows Update.
- JohnTHaller 5y agoGiven that Windows 10 is end of life in 3 years, it's not exactly useless.
- RedShift1 5y agoMicrosoft basically does what it wants up to the point where enough backlash starts occuring. "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission".
- JustSomeNobody 5y agoDon't get mad, just stop using Windows.
- Kye 5y agoJust as soon as the tools I use run on Linux or Macs come down in price.
- tartoran 5y agoI get the best of both worlds and use both. Windows has no place on my home computer. Im not gaming so Im good
- Kye 5y agoI'm not sure how that addresses the comment you replied to.
- CarelessExpert 5y agoWine? Virtual machines?
- Kye 5y agoNope.
- CarelessExpert 5y agoJust curious, why? Performance reasons? Compatibility? Something else? Speaking for myself, I run Linux on the desktop and Windows in a VM for office applications and so forth and it works fine. But obviously I'm not running Photoshop or gaming or anything like that (though in the case of the latter, Proton is already great and is poised to get even better)...
- Kye 5y agoJust no pressing need. I don't have any problems with Windows, and trying to get everything working in Wine or virtualization introduces more updates and new problems.
- llimos 5y agoIs this really a problem? It's not like it runs in the background. How is this different to adding, say, a new tab in the Settings app or a new screenshot tool (which they did a while back)?
- p1necone 5y agoAgreed - the negative tone in this article confuses me. All operating systems have a bunch of settings UIs, applications etc (except maybe like a bare arch install, or Alpine linux or something). If this was some game app full of ads or something I'd understand, but it's not.
- jbj 5y agoI automatically got candy crush from win 10. not sure if I should laugh or cry
- kyriakos 5y agoIndeed, what are they supposed to do? Pretend windows 11 doesn't exist for windows 10 users? I'd be worried if they started auto updating PCs but we are still not there thankfully.
- plushpuffin 5y agoI just checked my task manager, and it was running in the background. I never manually launched it. No idea what it was doing.
- bravetraveler 5y agoWaiting for a signal to start spamming users with the need to upgrade, I imagine
- throwawaymanbot 5y agoIt does run in the BG.
- outside1234 5y agoSince you have to upgrade, might as well head over to www.apple.com
- jszymborski 5y agoAlso https://distrochooser.de/ https://distrochooser.de/ or https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
- theknocker 5y agoIt continues to be astonishing that they will so eagerly piss away what little good will they accumulated while Google was being the bad guy.
- xony 5y agothey are dumping many other things .. well, they own your PC , they decide when to update/restart. thats the only reason I moved to Linux
