Companies must be forced to implement a subset of their features as part of some interoperability standard. The rest they can keep for their competitive advantage. I can't recall any industry who ever volunteered for this. Car makers didn't, telecoms didn't, software makers won't. No one did and they all exploited their users/customers to the fullest until they were forced to do so.
