It's colonial in Europe too - the massive American Tech corporations pay very little taxes in Europe, and use their strong monopolies to crush local competition. Then they ship all the profits and high-paying jobs back to the US. Just like the oil industry in Nigeria, etc.
- oytis 5y agoIt's not like they are not creating high-paying jobs in Europe though. Taxes re a problem, but I'm not sure if it is different for European international companies (e.g. how much taxes VW pays in the US).
- _vbnz 5y agoThey pay significantly less in Europe. I was paid ~75k EUR (~87k USD) as an L5 at Amazon (incl. bonus), levels.fyi states you'd expect around $165k in the same role in the US. That's before taxes in both cases - literally half the salary for what is meant to be the same role. The stock provision is also often much lower (less than half in my case compared to levels.fyi), and also faces higher taxes and the currency conversion when working in Europe but that can't really be avoided.
