Yeah, western governments (US, UK, EU) like to rahrah about democracy and the rule of law, but in reality they're fucking jokers. I'm quite left, but I don't wonder that rightwing populists are gaining in popularity when the citizenry can see how hypocritical their governments are.
There are dozens of examples, obviously. Like the treatment of Assange by British kangaroo courts, EU nepotism and corruption (like tax-haven-Juncker or inept van der Leyen getting top EU jobs), EU basically paying Erdogan, Libya, and building a military border to prevent refugees from reaching their shores...
As Louis Brandeis said:
> Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill it teaches the whole people by example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that in the administration of the criminal law the end justifies the means - to declare that the Government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal - would bring terrible retributions.
