Jumping spiders sense a world beyond our perception
- photochemsyn 5y agoOnce again, my belief that jumping spiders are among the most interesting creatures is validated: "The principal eyes — the big forward-facing ones that just beg us to anthropomorphize — have incredibly high resolution for creatures that are usually between 2 and 20 millimeters long. Their eyesight is sharper than any other spider’s and is the secret behind their ability to stalk and pounce on prey with impressive precision. Their sight is comparable to that of much larger animals like pigeons, cats and elephants. In fact, human visual acuity is only about five to 10 times better than a jumping spider’s."
- a0-prw 5y agoVery interesting article. Jumping spiders are fascinating. I had to laugh at one thing in a linked paper though ... "Spiders were fed crickets (Acheta domesticus) once weekly and provided with water ad libitum. [...] Animals were not harmed in this study." Um, the crickets XD
- Normille 5y ago>their large front eyes that make for adorable close-ups WTF is this latest craze for allegedly scientific articles talking to us like we were kindergarten children, by describing all manner of fauna as "adorable"? Spiders today and, yesterday, I read another linked 'scientific' article, which described tardigrades as having an 'adorable' walk. Sigh! --Does everything have to be dumbed down to the level of emojis and kitten pictures?
