> Then violence flared in Kashmir
I guess the Washington Post had to spew so much bullshit that it couldn't be bothered to devote enough space to expand on the nature of this "violence:" Forty Indian soldiers were murdered by the Army of Muhammed, a Pakistan-based terrorist outfit.[1]
> Facebook account was flooded with pro-Modi propaganda and anti-Muslim hate speech. “300 dogs died now say long live India, death to Pakistan,”
So criticizing terrorists and Pakistan is now anti-Muslim? I guess I am not surprised at this assertion. Support for genocidal Islamic regimes and terrorists is standard policy within the American security and media establishment. The Pakistan Army fights dirty and has done so since day one.[2][3] And the American establishment consistently defends it for some reason.
> when riots broke out in Delhi last year
Why?
Hinduphobes hated the fact that Hindus, Sikhs and other religious minorities that found themselves persecuted in Muslim-majority countries in the subcontinent were given a simplified path to citizenship through the CAA.[4] There are fifty-six Islamic countries in the world, but India, the homeland of the Hindus which was partitioned on religious lines into a Muslim Pakistan and a "secular" India, must not be allowed to rescue Hindus unless it also rescues their persecutors.
So they protested against the act claiming that it was "Islamophobic." And when the protests didn't work, they manufactured a couple of riots.
> One document stated that Facebook had not developed algorithms that could detect hate speech in Hindi and Bengali, despite them being the fourth- and seventh-most spoken languages in the world, respectively.
The statement is also a prime example of how incompetent or, depending on your view, deliberate the article is at covering or not covering the subject matter.
Hindi has a twin called Urdu. They are essentially the same language but with different influences: Sanskrit and Persian. And the alphabets or writing systems used are Devanagari and Persian. Hindi is the language of the Hindus. Urdu is that of the Muslims.
I don't find it surprising that political activists within Facebook would exclude Urdu from their document. Or that the Washington Post didn't bother to pick up on it. If the alpha and the omega of your article is Hinduphobia and the idea is to spread the propaganda that "hate speech" flows in only one direction, why would you even feign neutrality?

[3] Post-mortem examinations conducted by India reported that the prisoners variously had cigarette burns, ear-drums pierced with hot rods, many broken teeth and bones, fractured skulls, eyes that had been punctured before being removed, cut lips, chipped noses, and amputated limbs and genitalia. According to the examinations, these injuries preceded the captives being shot dead in the head. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saurabh_Kalia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saurabh_Kalia)

- mrjangles 5y agoThe lesson from your comment is that, regardless of the details or whether one agrees or disagrees, these issues are incredibly complex. It is always people who want to simplify everything into good and evil / right and wrong that want to censor free speech. And it is exactly those people, who have such a simple world view, that are the last people on earth who should be trusted to do so.
