The author has a remarkable lack of situational awareness, given that he's a Middle East correspondent for a major American newspaper. Did he not realize that phones are hackable, and that he'd be a prime target? For that matter, his bosses must have been just as clueless. Instead of assuming he was safe, he should have assumed he would be hacked as a matter of course, and proceeded accordingly.
