Amazon’s Worst Human Resources Problem
- cratermoon 5y agohttps://archive.md/cFEGu https://archive.md/cFEGu "The extent of the problem puts in stark relief how Amazon’s workers routinely took a back seat to customers during the company’s meteoric rise to retail dominance"
- bmitc 5y agoI can feel Amazon’s dystopian internals leaking out when I get YouTube ads talking about how supposedly great it is to work at Amazon. What a depressing company. I’ve been trying to reduce my usage of Amazon.
- m0zg 5y agoReduce in favor of what though? I have also been trying to diversify where I buy stuff. It's difficult. Some things you can only find in other giant chains like WalMart. I did diversify a number of my larger purchases, but I'm not sure the likes of WalMart or Best Buy are actually any less dystopian. I heard Costco treats its employees pretty well, but there aren't that many things you can buy there. Also, to get Amazon to reconsider its ways of doing business, people need to get off AWS. That's the real money maker for them, and therefore the only real leverage. But again, in favor of what? Google? I'm not sure it's any better ethically in the light of recent revelations. Microsoft? Massive technological suckage and ineptitude, and also dubious ethics. Smaller players like Digital Ocean? Viable for some things, but not for others. Sounds to me like we're out of options.
- bmitc 5y agoI fully agree it's a major challenge and with everything you wrote. I was going to say that it isn't easy in my original comment, and I don't even know if I have reduced, just that I am at least trying and am more conscious of it. I don't know how to get around it. The systems we've built are just too scaled and too powerful to work against. It's a consumer Borg.
