"It wasn't all magic" by "Colin B. Burke" is a very interesting read and details early efforts starting with MIT's Vannevar Bush in the 1930's and going to a bit past WWII. Developing a punch that wouldn't wear out was a major engineering challenge, just one of many interesting problems they had to overcome.
