Angela Merkel’s great migrant gamble paid off
- haihaibye 5y agoThere are facts and figures given in the article but the terms describing them (eg "Paid off") seem quite subjective, eg: 50% unemployment after 2-6 years residency is a success 10k out of 1.5m going to university (0.6% or 1.2% of those not in work) are not "outliers"
- IdiocyInAction 5y agoNote that it's 68% who have some kind of job and 50% who have full time employment. Well, I think, considering that German is pretty much a must in Germany and that it must be an incredibly hard language to learn for people from Syria, it seems like a relative success. Of course, 32% being unemployed is still very high, but that may be expected under the circumstances.
- chuckee 5y ago> By 2017, when Trump claimed that “crime in Germany is way up” because it had taken in “all of those illegals”, the number of overall recorded crimes was decreasing. Last year, crime in Germany sank to an 18-year low. The Guardian would make a much stronger case if they showed how the per-capita crime rate of people with a migrant background is no higher than for other Germans. Possibly income adjusted, or looking only at non-property-related crime. Sure they refuted Trump's claim, but we shouldn't use Trump as a guide for these discussions anyway. That is if we buy into the blinkered view of looking at migration only via the economy and crime-rate.
