It's incredibly hard to write a toolkit in general, I don't think Wayland has much to do with that. Using the X11 APIs to make a toolkit in 2021 is probably a worse idea. GTK and Qt want to improve but AFAIK they're low on staff, it may be beneficial to contribute to try and improve them. The Qt Company is hiring I think.
