- sanderjd 5y agoThat was also a significant takeaway from this for me! How cool!
- mhh__ 5y agoCool but these tools aren't all that useful in practice due to memory access dominating performance in the real world.
- sanderjd 5y agoSure, both things matter, but this gives good insight into one thing (the cycles) at least. Now what would be really neat would be if it would simulate memory and change behavior under some set of assumptions as well. Maybe such a thing exists?
- mhh__ 5y agoIt's not really possible with just running the program. The whole issue is that the cycles are usually dwarfed by a cache miss. You can just assume you don't miss the cache of course.
- ryanschneider 5y agoCasey Muratori just last week released a video where he uses it at the end as well, definitely worth a watch but be warned it’s basically part 3 of 3 and the context from the first two videos definitely helps, but that’s over 5 hours of (fascinating) content: https://youtu.be/1tEqsQ55-8I https://youtu.be/1tEqsQ55-8I
