As usual, the news is not about what happened but how it may have been covered up.
In the end, you need research on viruses to understand how they work and how to stop them. And the fact that the public should be treated like children and that transparency would lead to misunderstanding is shortsighted.
They also should spend some time explaining what gain-of-function means. It means adding "functionality" to a virus to increase their transmissibility to new species for example. If you research a virus to understand it and, in the course of your experiment, increase the transmissibility, it is not gain-of-function because the gain was not the objective. It's all a matter of intentions.
Are we going to stop trying to understand viruses? No but we definitely be transparent about it and make sure that we do it securely. Which is probably not what happened in Wuhan.
- bigodbiel 5y agoRecently France imposed a moratorium on prion research after its second researcher died of prion related disease. I guess the risks sometimes don’t justify the rewards.
- redis_mlc 5y agoFauci should be executed for these reasons: 1) Issuing 60-70 grants to WIV and grants to 26 other Chinese biolabs, all associated with the PLA, our enemy. (A PLA general took over WIV in late 2019 after the pandemic started.) 2) Refusing to acknowledge the Mar. 2020 Stanford paper was correct. Fauci's advice is the opposite of what 60,000 epidemiologists recommend. US children in lockdown states have been set back educationally for life, and the current economic woes are only the beginning. 3) Lying to Congress about GoF at WIV 4) Lying to the US public daily for over 18 months 5) Using Daszak as a cutout when transferring money to China. Fauci is at the center of perhaps the biggest conspiracy and scandal in world history. Nobody should believe a single word he says.
- mvdwoord 5y agoI think at this point we can safely state this is definitely not what happened in Wuhan. Being transparent that is.
- h2odragon 5y ago> spend some time explaining what gain-of-function means Well they would, but they haven't finished updating the definitions: https://twitter.com/JeremyRedfernFL/status/1451565600673828869 https://twitter.com/JeremyRedfernFL/status/14515656006738288...
- AndrewBissell 5y agoTaking as given your charitable view of the motivations of the people involved, what would you guess is the track record so far in terms number of lives saved versus number of lives lost from research which creates an entirely new virus in the lab in order to better "understand" it?
- rasz 5y ago>you need research on viruses to understand how they work and how to stop them by creating more transmittable variants? mm ok
