I don't really understand the point of this article. The vast majority of these things don't affect me of a day to day Linux Desktop user. I get that these are "problems" about Linux but the focus on "on the Desktop" makes it seem like it affects my end experience as a user on the desktop which 90% of the time it doesn't. A lot of this may be distro specific as well. I have been on Manjaro for the last 5 years and haven't looked back. Previously I was on Linux Mint and I wasn't a fan of Debian based OS on the desktop, rolling release works much better for me and Manjaro curbs the risk of this by having its own repos. I rarely find any software that I need to install that's outside of the AUR. I've never had a distro update that's broken everything, unlike when I was on Debian based desktop OSes. It's been a long time since I've had to do dodgy stuff like edit config files or compile drivers from source - having access to the latest kernel, unlike on Debian desktop devices, is awesome for this.
I'm not saying this stuff isn't valid and shouldn't be addressed but Windows, Mac, everything is kind of a shitshow behind the scenes cobbled together, and it makes sense that a desktop OS is going to be less clean and more buggy in that regard.
- jgilias 5y agoI second this. Like all of what you wrote applies to me as well. Manjaro 'just works' for me for quite a few years now. AUR is great, I've found some really obscure software there, and that also 'just works'. Like, everything has been so frictionless that it's borderline boring.
- cupcake-unicorn 5y agoHah, same, I think I had built up all this stuff around Linux and assuming that I'd have to tinker and in the past 5 years or so when things "just work" it took the fun out of it in a way, haha. That being said I get more sleep and am probably healthier overall due to it but I kind of feel like I'm glad to have gone through Linux bootcamp while I was younger to learn the basics :)

- itvision 5y agoIf it's all so perfect why this discussion has over two hundreds comments at least a half of which share the sentiment? Secondly, if it's pointless, why did you even (try to) read it? Pass on and live happily everafter.
