The thought of Facebook having telemetry on real time eye tracking data for a future popular Oculus VR headset in a few years is horrifying.
I’ll never get over the sale of Oculus to Facebook.
- aaroninsf 5y agoMe neither. Haven't touched their hardware since and won't; would pass on jobs if that becomes an aspect.
- charcircuit 5y agoWhy? Can you rationally explain what you are afraid of them doing?

- SV_BubbleTime 5y agoHave you considered how much VR is used for porn? Totally unrelated side note, but virtamate is um, probably risky for someone who feels like they could become obsessed with porn.
- charcircuit 5y ago>Have you considered how much VR is used for porn? And what does that have to do with eye tracking? I could see it recommend more content based off what you are looking at instead of having to manually like posts. Having a hands free experience sounds like a pro to me. >virtamate is um, probably risky for someone who feels like they could become obsessed with porn. Almost all VR porn sucks compared to the flatscreen counterpart. There's also a much bigger collection of 2D stuff that exists.
- SV_BubbleTime 5y ago> And what does that have to do with eye tracking? Nothing. But the Quest2 specially also has four cameras that point out at you and your rooms. So it’s the same theme that I don’t really want Facebook seeing anything remotely related to this. > Almost all VR porn sucks compared to the flatscreen counterpart. Compelling argument.
- charcircuit 5y ago>So it’s the same theme that I don’t really want Facebook seeing anything remotely related to this. What's the issue of them anonymously collecting things like how big your room is, or what the average brightness of your room is? >Compelling argument. It's mostly subjective. The vast majority of it is blurry 3 DoF videos and proper 6 DoF content is limited.
- lukeschlather 5y agoEye tracking is biometric data. It can reliably be used to detect various neurological conditions.
- charcircuit 5y agoThis is about telemetry, not the direct eye tracking data. Also I'm not sure how you could detect various conditions with just what you look at. That seems a little far fetched / not reliable. Even if it could magically diagnose you with a condition what would be the point to do that? To sell you medication? To connect you with others who share your condition? Those things don't mseem to be much to worry about.
- Azsy 5y agoNot medical condition, but your state of mind. The goal is to sell others the option to change your mind. Everybody keeps getting surprised at how seemingly irrelevant data points can be used to segment/profile people with a shockingly high accuracy. It seems the only requirement is scale.
- ogma 5y agoJust because you're an unimaginative, naive moron doesn't mean something is "far-fetched" or "nothing to worry about".
