The trap or myth of meritocracy is well-documented, it destroys itself rather fast. Meritocracy is transient in nature, merit always becomes a synonym for wealth and social class, at which point you are back to oligarchy. Competition is usually not the answer, it ends up hurting everyone, including the winners. Cooperation is the key. Unfortunately we live in a world that treats life as a competitive struggle for survival. We used to mistake evolution for being competition driven as well.
