From my experience, the Japanese people have really mastered the art of looking stupid. Going as far as acting like they don't understand anything and has zero clue of what you're talking about. In nicer cases, they get so amazed of how well you play the piano when in reality they're one of the greatest of pianists and you're just a beginner. It's difficult to tell who is who. Knowing this, I cautiously assume everyone is smart. Sometimes, it's scary how smart/skilled someone actually turns out to be.
