First and foremost, this is a nice recruitment post. Not that it’s devious in any way.
While Cloudflare has introduced many industry disrupting features, the pace of innovation isn’t that fast if you look a bit deeper. For example, it only took like three years or longer for domain registration to be available for new domains (it was only transfers until then). The reason given for this on a HN comment was a non-answer. If you visit the forums on Cloudflare, you’ll also see different kinds of billing related issues that, while they may be a bit complex, are not responded to as well as one might expect.
Nevertheless, Cloudflare is doing a lot of stuff that will prod the competition to wake up (or just let them die).
- AznHisoka 5y agoDomain registration is a commodity these days, and there are plenty of providers in that area. Why would Cloudflare want to spend much resources innovating on that, when there are other things they can do?
- bern4444 5y agoDomain registration is one of the first things you have to do when creating a website. If you want to register a domain and see you can do so on cloudflare, I'm sure it will bring people who otherwise would have registered on godaddy or namecheap into cloudflare and get those customers introduced to cloudflare's services. It's a lead generator and gets people into using cloudflare earlier.
- corobo 5y agoBecause now when someone registers a domain they're instantly a part of the Cloudflare ecosystem. No faffing with getting them to update nameservers Sell the domain at cost now and the paid products later
- tyingq 5y agoNice up-sell and cross-sell opportunities every time someone manages, renews, etc, their domain. And inserts into renewal, login-notice emails, etc. Selling domain registration at cost is a smart move for them.
