Learning something and pretending like you know it already are two goals that are very at odds with each other. It's one of the things I felt got better when going from high school to university - in high school I felt like I needed to do both to get good grades (because of how much of your grade came from the teacher's impression of you) whereas in uni, I didn't have to bother and could just focus on learning.
