I don't think there is any chance of Facebook becoming the company that hosts the most widely popular metaverse in 20 years. Facebook, under Zuck's leadership in particular, is driven by greed and control. They repeatedly demonstrate a willingness to make user hostile decisions for short term gain: they build to commodify their audience, not to satisfy them. Times Square Wal-Mart is Mark's idea of a virtual wonderland, and that's why it won't win. The successful metaverse will be led by someone with the spirit of Willy Wonka - it must be whimsical and empowering and sincere. Facebook simply lacks that spirit and heart, and I see no path to them changing company culture that drastically.
