I rewrote all my Perl app code in JS to run entirely on the client side years ago but Perl is still my go to server side tool. For example, I used to use HTML:Template, now I use Mustache.js. I'm quite sure I could do most anything I do with Perl with Python instead but since that would be pretty much the only thing I'd use Python for I'd spend more time learning how to do it than is necessary. I still use CGI.pm for a lot of what I do on the server side, which is not very much anymore. But for what I do use it for it's very good at and I've never had a problem with it.
