Netflix Co-CEO Says He ‘Screwed Up’ When Defending Dave Chappelle Special
- vfulco2 5y agoMan, when can we get back to an executive class with a spine and common sense. Can't have free speech if only one self-appointed group dictates what can be said.
- throwawaysea 5y ago> Can't have free speech if only one self-appointed group dictates what can be said. This is what worries me - it feels a lot like the Cultural Revolution in slow motion (although arguably that too took place in slow motion). Any ideas outside the one approved idea set are treated as heretical. And those who espouse such views are not worthy of visibility or acceptance or power. Isn’t this exactly what authoritarian societies demand? Why is it excusable or normalized when authoritarianism is decentralized or implemented via powerful private organizations.
- mempko 5y agoWhat are you talking about? Chappell expressed an idea that was mainstream only a couple years ago. Nothing he is saying is new , or 'truth'. He is just an old man expressing old ideas
- NtochkaNzvanova 5y ago> He is just an old man expressing old ideas https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Olds https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Olds Hmm...
- mempko 5y agoCool!
- weezin 5y agoI remember a time when people didn't have to be coddled from opinions they don't like. He should have just said nothing.
- samplatt 5y agoNo you don't; that time never existed. It's just that previously the only people with voices were the powerful. Look at what happened when George Pullman or Trump or John Adams had their opinions challenged. They throw childish tantrums until they get their way.

- EastOfTruth 5y agoThey need to add a couple letters to LGBTQ.... like HS or something... for hyper sensitive.
- ipspam 5y agoOh!!! THEY WERE HURTING! Guess we can't have nice stuff, like comedy that's funny.
- yuppie_scum 5y agoHe should have just said nothing and let it pass
- no_butterscotch 5y agoI don't think he screwed up in defending the special. I do however think he, and Netflix, have screwed up by hiring activist employees. I believe there's a way to screen out these employees that wouldn't involve discrimination or lawsuits.
- weezin 5y agoYou are looking at it, or at least what could have been if he didn't back down. Not backing down creates a forcing function to where they leave and people like them won't come.
- errantmind 5y agoThat seems like a desired outcome
- sjg007 5y agoLol... you are out of your mind man.
- bunfunton 5y agoThese types of employees are the worst and sow discontent. Don’t negotiate with terrorists
- version_five 5y ago> sow discontent I haven't seen this get enough attention. Lots of us that have worked at tech companies have seen the toxic environment that these people create. Imagine having your colleagues vocally goading you into taking up some cause, where you either have to just go along with them or assert yourself and risk reprisal or at least conflict. It's really not a nice way to work. Defending the activists is really saying fuck you to the rest of the employees and not supporting them against a hostile minority.
- aiscapehumanity 5y agoImagine if someone did a special and said all lives matter back in 2020. That's what this is like, TERF stuff denies that trans brains even have even more mosaic architecture, it's complete bioconservatism. Denial of existence. Excuse people if they want to defend the aspects of their existence.
- aiscapehumanity 5y agoChapelles bit also throws trans POC under the bus as well

- hw-guy 5y agoThey always roll over in the end. Better watch Dave Chappelle while you can.
- Mindwipe 5y agoIt remains pretty crazy that he made the defenses he did given Netflix have previously pulled episodes of Community for having a joke about how blackface is bad. Doesn't exactly seem consistent other than "we spent a lot" on this mess.
