The US controls the world economy via dollars. The British controlled by colonization. What is the new Chinese mantra? Exporting cheap plastic toys? Everyone has nukes, so they can’t do what the British did. World is already hooked onto dollars, don’t see that changing. There has to be some new thing that the Chinese can use as an instrument of aggression and control that no one else has / is better at. I can’t think of a single thing other than exporting cheap plastics and trinkets. Alternatively we should wait to predict until Xi passes on.
- simonblack 5y agoThe Chinese will simply do what the US used to do: be the world's manufacturer. The US was the world's biggest manufacturer for some 80 years between about 1900 and 1980. They made lots and lots of money during that time. In 1980 the US was the world's biggest creditor nation. By the time Reagan left office 8 years later, the US was the world's biggest debtor nation. China doesn't only make cheap plastic stuff. They may have started out doing that but they are rapidly progressing up the value chain, just as Japan did between 1935 and 1945 and then again between 1960 and 1990. As Putin pointed out only a week or two ago, the US is shooting itself in the foot badly by weaponising the US Dollar with sanctions and cutting off the use of SWIFT by some nations. That's the quickest way to lose World Reserve Currency status, as quite a few nations are actively discontinuing the use of the USD in their trade.
