If the trackpad was centered on the chassis, your right palm would be constantly in contact with about a third of the trackpad, which could result in accidentally moving the cursor. The asymmetry may look ugly to some, but the upside is optimal usability. If the numpad was removed from the design, then we could have the best of both worlds... but then numpad users would be turned off.
