Wait, no face unlock? Thats a dealbreaker.
- paxys 5y agoIf the under-display fingerprint reader actually works then I 100% prefer it over face unlock. Bonus points for not having an ugly notch on top.
- davesque 5y agoReally surprised to hear this. I've had really bad luck with face unlock. I find I have to type in my PIN half the time anyway. On the other hand, with my previous pixel that had a fingerprint reader, I never had any issues with it whatsoever. I think face unlock is a bit of a regression on the part of device makers.
- krzyk 5y agoI have dry hands and fingeprint sensors stop recognizing them aftere about a week (or month if it is summer season) - so it is really frustrating. On the other hand Face Unlock works always (well, unless I wear a mask, then it works just like fingeprint - doesn't). Tried fingeprint sensors on iOS devices and Pixels.
- JacobLinney 5y agoI'm curious why, what does face unlock do for you that fingerprint doesn't? If I'm unlocking my phone, I have my hands on my phone, so using my fingerprint isn't a hassle. Plus with COVID and needing to wear masks, I can still unlock my phone easily without needing to pull down my mask.
- josefresco 5y agoI got sweaty hands and that doesn't work with TouchID. FaceID has been great, well at least until COVID. I'd really prefer both.
- krzyk 5y agoSimilar situation for me (but I have dry hands). Fingerprint sensors stop recognizing after about a week - so I prefer Face Unlock.
- nsriv 5y agoFace Unlock has been an available feature on every Pixel for a while and is present in the latest Android 12 Beta, it's just not depth-sensing because it lacks the hardware that the Pixel 4 and iPhone use, just uses front-facing camera instead and warns you about using it.
- Grazester 5y agoWhere are you getting this from? I have a Pixel 5. It doesn't have face unlock. Only the 4 did!
- hbn 5y agoIt was actually originally announced/demoed on a Galaxy Nexus running ICS back in 2011! They might have removed it at some point after that and added it again for the Pixel 4 since its entire gimmick was the soli sensor https://www.theverge.com/2011/10/18/android-ice-cream-sandwich-feature-face-unlock https://www.theverge.com/2011/10/18/android-ice-cream-sandwi...
- Bhilai 5y agoAh thanks for the note.
- distances 5y agoAll the weak biometrics are disabled in banking apps etc, so you'll still need the fingerprint (or just the PIN code).
- meerita 5y agoI find face unlock amazing. The only situation that sucks is with the mask.
- krzyk 5y agoI think they could make it work even with masks. Just focus on the eye regions. Apple worked on it, don't know if they released it with iPhone 13.
