Stepping Out of the Firehouse of the Internet
- h2odragon 5y agoWhen I used to maintain email systems, I had a monthly archive script that, on the first of the month, created a $(LAST_MONTH-YEAR) mailbox, and moved the user's entire inbox to it. It also archived the "Trash" mailbox with a date. Users could opt out of this, but none did. Informal polling about doing it mid month and keep "last two weeks" of mails in the inbox suggested it wasn't worth the effort: people really enjoyed the clean break. In theory that kind of tiny affordance could be added to any (or every!) mail client, I'm sure some have them and some use that facility. But how many of these people with the 100k inboxes have any idea they might do something about it? These people obviously haven't grasped the concept of .. i dunno, owning their information input? can't even express it.
