Car brands that have increased the most and least in the past year
- kfprt 5y agoThe average everything costs more than it did a year ago. The only thing that hasn't gone up commensurately is average wages.
- ConceitedCode 5y agoWages are rising too. A part of the rising costs at the moment is rising labor costs. Median usual weekly real earnings adjusted for seasonality - https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LES1252881600Q https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LES1252881600Q
- post_break 5y agoMy home loan went from 30 year 4.2% to 20 year 2.2% so I've got that going for me.
- gambiting 5y agoSame, remortgaged at 1.29%, paying significantly less for my house now. Really really low interest rates everywhere you look.
- hparadiz 5y agoI'm seeing job listings with 50% higher pay that were unheard of a year ago.
- twalla 5y agoIt's absolutely nuts out there right now. If you're not getting a 30 percent raise this year you're taking a pay cut.
- thehappypm 5y agoI think Chevy here is a bit disingenuous because there's been a trend by GM and Ford to stop making small/cheap cars and focus on trucks and SUVs. So it makes sense that over time the average will go up for these brands. The reasoning is that American small cars like the Focus are just not as popular as their extremely affordable and reliable competitors from Japan like the Corolla, Camry, Civic, etc.
- throwaway0a5e 5y agoI agree there's probably something there but if truck and more expensive SUVs were driving the price increases wyou'd expect to see a very different list. Other than Chevy and Ford the list is dominated by brands that don't really do trucks and the demographics who are over-represented on HN proudly turn their noses up at. I think the trend we're seeing is that people who formerly would only consider a Civic or Corrolla and wouldn't be caught dead in a Sentra are being forced to consider the latter because #EverythingShortage
- ethagknight 5y agoYear over year? I don’t think that’s disingenuous. Pertinent maybe, but not misleading. Every automaker likely has some asterisks. GMs trend away from small vehicles has been in process for decades. I’m trying to buy a suburban, and there’s a $5000 “market up charge” OVER msrp and the vehicles sit on the lot for mere hours until they sell. We’ve missed out on several because someone else beat us to the dealership by minutes.
- throwaway0a5e 5y agoNo surprises there. It's basically just the list from the "top car brands upper middle class suburbanites hate" clickbait article from 2019 but with a different context. Now that those people can't as readily advertise their upper middle class parenting prowess by putting a 4Runner in the driveway the same money is chasing anything it can get its hands on so the prices on everything else are being driven up toward equilibrium. Edit: do people think I'm wrong or are they just annoyed that I pointed out that perceived image was part of their car buying decision?
- natch 5y agoDismissive brush-off comments sometimes get downvoted, if that’s what your edit was asking about. Personally I think a 38% price increase is surprising even though I understand there is a supply/demand issue. Understandable, believable, but still surprising.
- kwertyoowiyop 5y agoIncorrect apostrophe’s in headlines really grind my gears! ;-)
- zachshefska 5y agoThat’s what I get for writing and posting with no editor fixed! Thanks for reading
- whycombagator 5y agoDoesn’t include stats for Volvo, which is weird
- bombcar 5y agoAs shortages have mounted, car companies have directed the parts they do have to the higher-profit (higher cost) vehicles.
- natch 5y agoTesla, which just sells cars directly on their web site, gets left off the list. This seems to “brands for which we can earn a commission by offering our services to help you through the dealership purchasing process.” It’s that old investigative question: Who benefits? Kind of like when Biden held a White House “EV Summit” for auto makers and did not invite Tesla… I kid you not, this happened. Still scratching my head over that one.
