New model proposes a filament-like magnetic tunnel encompassing the solar system
- kataklasm 5y agofor some reason the Vice article links to the wrong paper? anyway, here's the link to the actual paper regarding the matter ;-) https://arxiv.org/pdf/2109.14720 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2109.14720
- armagon 5y agoThank you. I was confused when glancing over the paper. Incidentally, there are additional pictures attempting to convey the idea at https://www.dunlap.utoronto.ca/astronomer-discovers-tunnel-like-structure-may-surround-earth/ https://www.dunlap.utoronto.ca/astronomer-discovers-tunnel-l...
- Shadonototra 5y agoSome scientists even suggest out planet is stuck inside a Black Hole That would explain the "filament-like" magnetic tunnel There are a lot more we can't explain, we stuck looking at the light or some "waves" The answser is something we can't see
- gremlinsinc 5y agoI wonder if simulation theory, could have some purpose for a filament or tunnel surrounding us? It's odd for sure, sort of like the Cosmological Axis of Evil which basically puts our solar system in the center of the universe (or central meridian) as far as heat is concerned... it's colder below, hotter above us...
- bopbeepboop 5y agoConjecture: This magnetic “tunnel” is a galactic anyon from the quasar at the center of the (younger) Milky Way. We’re seeing the crazy, tangled field of that quasar “inflated” when it extinguished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anyon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anyon Conjecture 2: We’ve systematically failed to measure the binding force of these large structures on the galaxy — as the galaxy “flying apart” would require inputting energy to “inflate” this tube further.
- DiggyJohnson 5y ago> But landing on this conclusion was only possible when West reframed her vision of the galaxy—literally. While most researchers look at maps of the Milky Way with the North Pole at the top and the galactic center in the middle, West told Motherboard that redrawing this map from a different perspective, with a different center point, made viewing the connection between the NPS and the Fan Region easier. Because the structures are too far away to ever possibly visit by spaceship, she relies primarily upon computer models and telescopes for her assessments. West likens the work to drawing a three-dimensional rendering of your own house while stuck on your couch, unable to leave. This seemed like the salient paragraph in the Vice article. Beyond that, /u/katalasm link to the paper is the next step. [1] https://arxiv.org/pdf/2109.14720 https://arxiv.org/pdf/2109.14720
