When Will They Learn Algebra?
- spacedcowboy 5y agoI don’t know what will happen in the future of course, but my son was doing simultaneous linear equations in third grade, and not really having problems with it tbh. He’s started 4th grade now, and is doing exponentials with constant powers, next up is exponentials with variable powers, and then the quadratic formula, though they introduce it gradually. He ought to be doing that pretty much for the final third of the year.
- h2odragon 5y agoI'm not sure philosophers need to be good at math. Art, on the other hand, often requires rather a lot of math, depending on how it is done. I dare say there's plenty of programmers who are weak in Algebra specifically but who have been able to adapt despite that. All the special program I saw in American schools were more about who you were than what you could do, so I can't see any reason to expect "tracking" to be any different.
- powera 5y agoIt's a minor point, but I will stand behind that philosophers need to know algebra. Calculus, possibly not, but algebra yes. Algebra skills are too closely related to formal logic to be skipped. And trying to reason about utilitarianism requires solving algebra problems.
