Re: Printer drivers, you mostly don't need them any more, because almost all printers will now ingest pdf directly. You can bypass cups and your driver and talk directly to the printer using nc:
cat myfile.pdf |nc printername 9100
- tonyedgecombe 5y agoMost of the budget printers won't support that, they don't have enough processing power to render PDF directly. Even with the typical enterprise printer it's not as reliable as you might expect.

- Wowfunhappy 5y agoSeems like something you could test and see if it works on your printer.
- ziml77 5y agoWhat's a test going to tell you? The reason he's saying it's a bad idea is because it's possible to end up with the printer executing a partially submitted job or not using settings that match up with the document you're trying to print.
- Wowfunhappy 5y agoIf you end up with a partially submitted job, then you'll know you need to install the printer drivers. If it prints successfully, then you'll know the drivers were unnecessary. I assume you'll hang onto this printer for long enough a couple wasted sheets of paper are not a large concern.
