AWS makes one-time donation of $5000 to curl
- hackthefender 5y agoThe "congratulations" is a bit condescending. AWS clearly benefits from curl. But I guess that is FOSS in a nutshell.
- m0zg 5y agoAWS C++ SDK uses it to access AWS. Probably some other AWS SDKs as well. That amount should have been at least 10x and recurring.
- chucke 5y agoThat's a bit overstated. Although curl wrappers exist for most languages, they're far from popular or consensual in each individual community.
- m0zg 5y agoWhat's "overstated"? Literally every single API request in C++ AWS SDK goes through libcurl.
- rameshs 5y agoAnd atleast compounding as well. /s
- bdcravens 5y ago> AWS clearly benefits from curl Don't we all?
- markherhold 5y agoWow 5k Don’t blow the entire bank account AWS
- CaptainNegative 5y agoI'm sure the authors of curl are reeling about getting a $5000 donation for their free bit of code.
- coolspot 5y agoIt’s ok, they were smart enough to not setup a recurring charge.

- alwayshumans 5y agoI wonder if it's just a random manager who approved the donation. For those who don't have experience of big orgs 5k is often in the region where you don't need to go higher for approval or involve procurement
- peakaboo 5y agoWhat a ridicolous amount....aws is almost mocking the curl developers with such a shitty sum and a one-time payment as well. What is wrong with these tech companies? Completely out of touch with the reality of the rest of the planet.
- rzz3 5y agoAccording to your logic they shouldn’t have even donated.
- superdisk 5y agoIt's like tipping the waiter a penny.
- nodesocket 5y agoIf you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. They didn't have to donate at all. $5k is not an insignificant amount of money for most people.
- zimpenfish 5y ago> $5k is not an insignificant amount of money for most people. But it is an insignificant, rounding-to-zero, amount of money for Amazon given how much they rely on curl (and other OSS).
- t0mas88 5y agoWhy is everyone pitchforking that it's not enough? It's a library that is free for everyone, nearly every company on the web uses it somewhere. Almost none of them donate anything. Someone at AWS went through the effort to make this donation, I think that should only be encouraged.
- aufhebung 5y agoThis could be donation matching. I don't think AWS would give such a small sum for any other reason.
