Working at a University it is mind boggling to me how much paper is waster because someone internally decided they need a real signature. Not all my colleagues are savyy enough to paste a scanned signature into a pdf.
- bootlooped 5y agoI had a networking class in a computer lab where there was an unmetered printer. Almost all student accessible printers on campus cost money to use; I can only guess this slipped through the cracks somehow. Every day some idiot would be printing off entire power point presentations for all the lectures she was in and who knows what else. The printer would be running for the first half the class. Disgusting wastefulness.
- chaoskanzlerin 5y agoThere's plenty of jurisdictions where "pasting a scanned signature into a pdf" doesn't produce a legally valid signature. Germany requires some signing software for pdfs - though printed-signed-scanned documents are also legally valid signatures
- vlovich123 5y agoShow me someone who can tell the difference between pasting a signature in a pdf vs printed-signed-scanned? There was a legislature in America that tried to define pi as 3 so irrational laws are not surprising.

- jackson1442 5y agoAside the point but I can generally tell. With PDF signatures they’re either too smooth on the lines (that’s what mine is) or there’s some artifacting on the signature.
- Al-Khwarizmi 5y agoIf you go that route, most people can't tell the difference between a person's signature and a different person faking their signature. By the way, in Spain printed-signed-scanned wouldn't be legally valid either, unless a notary has seen the original and can certify that it coincides with their own handwritten signature. Otherwise it's either original handwritten signature, or digital signature in a digital PDF file, or printed digital signature with a secure validation code that you can verify in some URL.
- WarOnPrivacy 5y ago> Show me someone who can tell the difference between pasting a signature in a pdf vs printed-signed-scanned? One challenge with potentially invalid documents - when agreements go south and disgruntled employees get a free wrench to toss into the works. Another motivator is not wanting to risk cheesing off judges. source: Once prepped federal cases
- garaetjjte 5y ago>doesn't produce a legally valid signature Is there any place where it does? It seems ridiculous to me to treat copy-pasted bitmap same as real signature.
- jsilence 5y agoProbably true. The point is that most of these "need a real signature" requirements are arbitrary and inhouse. Not really legal requirements. So the processes could easily be done without.
- mhh__ 5y agoI enjoy printing stuff out to really digest it, but I absolutely agree that there is a huge amount of printing basically being done for no reason. In a certain way I kind of enjoy printing to a printer that's not near me, if it can get away with it, if I have printed something off to read over the course of a week I feel like it adds some gravitas to actually go and fetch it.
