Street Views: City streets seemed eerily empty in the early years of photography
- kfarr 5y agoTLDR: Early cameras had long exposure time and didn't capture moving subjects
- bellyfullofbac 5y agoSkimmed through the text.. it seems long and meanders through topics, even devoting a paragraph or two to software that removes people from photos, and at the end of it talks about California Prop 22 and how gig workers have been priced out of San Francisco.
- 8bitsrule 5y agoNot so eerie, even apart from the minutes-long exposures. The US population in 1920 was 106 million; only 50% lived in cities (up from 25% of 38 million in 1870) . Today it's 80% out of 331 million.
