I am waiting for this. I want that RTS game that I can enter with $20 and make that my economy and buy up my army. If I win, I pillage your $20. It’s hard to make a case that an RTS is gambling (which they’ve been doing with Poker for some time now).
We have yet to enter the new world of wagering. It’ll be even funnier if your SCV’s mining minerals is them mining Bitcoin. Long SC2 fights, with something on the line. I say we embrace it.
We have no clue what pay to win actually means yet. The sheer capitalism of it all is fascinating, and probably where it belongs, might give us more perspective of how ruthless we are in reality and possibly even curb it.

- astlouis44 5y agoYeah when you really think about it, the proposition is that you can play games and truly participate in it as an actual owner, and ultimately make money. That’s why Axie Infinity is blowing up right now. This plus DAO’s (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) could get really interesting because in a blockchain game you could have the high council being players that can make decisions in game, that were themselves elected by the community. Furthermore, when you introduce real economics into virtual worlds, you start to output something that starts represents a digital society, which is the basis for the metaverse. Bravo to Epic for having the foresight and curiousity to entertain this new paradigm shift.
- crate_barre 5y agoThe irony of it is that in many things in life, you are not an equitable stake holder. Certainly not in most of the companies we work for, and most are desperately trying to gain equity in home ownership, and politically we have very little (if anything) vested. So in fantasy, I can totally see the desire to fulfill that stake. Let me own something, god damnit.
- tchock23 5y agoCan we leave games as the one area of life that doesn’t need to be ‘monetized?’ I play games for the intrinsic enjoyment. Why does everything need to be commercialized like this?
