It's an X server. While it's amazing Microsoft has added it in as part of their OS, it's just doing what X software has always done on Linux and Mac and BSD etc. I and other people are already doing this on Windows 10. Just with 3rd party Xserver software instead of WSLg.
The part that I do find innovative is the File Manager interaction. That came as a total surprise. Next I hope that they make the file systems as a whole a bit more seamless. Running backups from my Linux image allows me to process both the Linux and Windows home directories, but the same (so far) is not possible the other way around. Judging by the File Manager interaction, it soon will be, though.
What I would find more innovative is if Windows would find a way to make their software work over SSH -X. Remote desktop is a whole lot of nothing if you have to stream the entire desktop for a single app.
