Man Creates a 128 GB Floppy Disk (2016)
- nanis 5y agoOne thing led to another an I found this IBM Aptiva Sleeper: https://imgur.com/a/NVPZI https://imgur.com/a/NVPZI which is just amazing. Actually, this is even better https://imgur.com/a/fvh1M https://imgur.com/a/fvh1M
- theonlybutlet 5y agook. this link is redeeming. Way cooler than the original link let on.
- xg15 5y agoOoh alright! Ok, this makes way more sense in context.
- xg15 5y agoSo if I understand this correctly, he fitted a 128 GB SD card into a floppy disk, then fitted an SD card reader into an old floppy drive. So while it looks as if you're putting a floppy disk into a floppy drive, you are actually inserting an SD card into a card reader. Maybe a decent art project but doesn't seem very special from a technical perspective.
- theonlybutlet 5y agoHe could've easily put a terabyte in there.
- chedabob 5y agoThe original article is from 2016. I think 128GB was the biggest you could buy before the $/GB started to get silly.
- jakedata 5y agoI still have an Imation 128 MB "floptical" drive and some disks in the back of the lab somewhere. I assume it will be critical to read such media some time in the future. Probably...
- MerelyMortal 5y agoI think that was called SuperDisk. I had one, but lost it :-/
- RattleyCooper 5y ago"Man shoves SD card into floppy disk and shit writer posts about it with a misleading clickbait title"
- Waterluvian 5y agoI was disappointed that this is just a visual hack and not the equivalent of that 3.5mm to cassette adapter. I want an SD card that interfaces with a digital magnetic thingy for reads and writes. Which also got me wondering: does a floppy report its disk space? Can it be told to report far more? Would we have to memory bank it? Would it always assume 720kb or 1.44mb?
