The Moral Panic Engulfing Instagram
- garbagecoder 5y agoIsn't the burden of proof on the social media side? There is certainly prima facie evidence that this is the case. Since everyone seems to suddenly be massively skeptical of medications, as an example, I would ask if at the same time as a new prescription aimed at teenagers came out teenagers started breaking out in green spots, wouldn't most parents stop the medication and wait for some other cause to be shown as the source of the green spots? In other words, who is right and wrong has less to do with this discussion than being super careful with kids until we're solid that it's not harmful.
- metalliqaz 5y agoI intend to do my best to teach my kids media literacy as soon as they are old enough. In other words, to teach them that publishing something doesn't make it truthful. That doing it for a camera doesn't make it normal. That people hide their intentions, follow bad incentives, and form groups to propagate bad ideas; especially online. It will be tough but I think if I start earlier enough, I might be able to protect her psyche from the open cesspool that is modern social media. All media, really. From fake butts on Insta, to fake reviews on Amazon, to fake news on Infowars, to fake DIY hacks on YouTube. I will teach her that there are lies everywhere.
